USTRC National Finals of Team Roping #15 Shoot Out Sunday October 23, 2005 USTRC Oklahoma State Fair Arena Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
The tension in the air was almost so thick you could cut it a knife. The music pulsated across the coliseum and sometimes you honestly had to stop and think to breath. The pressure was building as the top twenty teams in the #15 Shoot Out listened intently to their call back positions.
However, Colter Todd, USTRC team roper from Marana, Arizona heard none of the hullabaloo. The last thing on his mind was a first place payout of some $75,000. Colter knew in his heart that he was where he was because of the wonderful grace of God and that was all that mattered. Whatever the outcome, regardless of how it all turned out and whether it came together or didn’t he knew he was blessed and he would rope like he had programmed himself to do.
When it was all over and the marbles counted, Colter and partner, Ryan Powell of Caldwell, Idaho nailed down $75,800, Martin Trophy Saddles, Gist Gold Buckles, Tony Lama TLX Full Quill Ostrich Boots, and beautiful Western Horseman Framed Prints to take the win in the #15 Shoot Out. The team had a 38.74 on five head.
“It is an awesome feeling,” Todd said, “I just prayed to stay calm and rope to give God glory. I just hope that everything I do gives God glory.”
Todd and Powell went into the short round in the seventh place spot. They posted a time of 5.89 on their short round steer and it was exactly what they needed to take the win.
“I’m so glad I was able to come,” Todd elaborated. “I have to say thanks to Mel Potter for the horse and the opportunity to get here.”
Todd and Powell haven’t roped together much except in the practice pen but no doubt they will probably make an extended effort to rope together from now on.
“This is the first roping we have been to as a team,” commented Ryan Powell, the other end of the championship team. “Colter stayed at my house some this summer and that is the only time we have ever roped together. I was able to pick Colter up when another friend of mine couldn’t come. This win is an unbelievably emotional high.”
Both young men hauled an incredibly long distance to get to this year’s USTRC National Finals of Team Roping.
“It is some 1600-1700 miles to this roping,” Powell explained. “It is risky and the last thing you want to do is something stupid. I think that was my game plan to just rope right and not do anything stupid. I’m still in shock that I’m holding a check for $75,000. That is incredible.”
Powell, who works on a ranch in Idaho, also credits his boss and family for his success.
“I live on a ranch in Idaho and work for Ken Wood and his family,” elaborated Powell. “My boss is just the most supportive and caring person and has done so much to help me achieve my goals. He provides steers for me to rope and gives me the opportunity to rope. I have such a fantastic job and boss. I cannot thank him enough for that. Having a great sponsor like Willard Ropes is a great asset also. I really appreciate what they do for me.”
Both young men have some unique thoughts on practice and how it has helped them to achieve their goals.
“I think how you practice is more important than just going to run steers,” explained Todd. “You really need a goal or a specific issue that you are working on. You really have to train yourself to do things so they become second nature. When you get in a situation like this roping today with $75,000 involved you don’t have time to think. Honestly, you cannot think when that much money is up. How you practice and what you program yourself to do is more important. It all comes down to you just being so automatic, so programmed that you rise to the occasion. Your practice, your win, and or your loss must glorify God. That is the most important thing.”
Powell couldn’t agree more. “You have to have a goal in mind when you head to the practice pen. Although I have watched and studied the best ropers there are and Clay O’Brien Cooper and the Peska’s are my heroes I had to define my own style. My style is my style. Everyone has a chance to win, to succeed. My dream has been to rope at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and this is really close to that dream.”
Both young men give great credit to the horses they were riding this weekend.
“I have this awesome blue mare that I got from Cory Peska,” Powell commented. “I got her in August and she is awesome. People have already tried to buy her but she is not for sale.”
There were only 4.4 seconds separating the first place team and the twentieth team when the short go kicked off. Powell and Todd knew their win was a God thing especially when you consider there was only thirteen one hundreds of a second separating them from the second place team, Scott Elliott and Anthony Calmelat.
“I just praise God for giving me the talent to rope and it is to His glory that I an able win a roping like this one. I could never have been here without God involved,” said Todd. “I can’t do anything without Him in my life.”
“It is just the most emotional thing I have ever experienced,” Powell said with a quiver in his voice. My wife is at home and I got to call and tell her. We are just so blessed.”
The 2005 USTRC National Finals of Team Roping will probably be one roping that neither Powell nor Todd will ever forget. This is team roping at its very best and it changes lives in ways one can never imagine. WOW! |
That is such good, good news, don't you agree??

| my little sister, who just turned 6, and I had a conversation that was quite theological last nite. here's how it went...
amber: so, can the devil make people have babies??
me: well, the devil can't make the baby, only God can.
amber: okay, so, the angels are up in the sky, and the demons on down on the ground, and how do they fight? who wins?
me: well, angels and demons don't have skin and muscle and blood like we do, they're spirit. when they fight, they don't fight like how we would fight. and God always wins when the angels and demons fight. you should ask Pastor Mike how it all happens.
amber: okay, i'll ask Pastor Mike how God beats Satan.
me: okay, that sounds good.
(later at church)
amber (to Pastor Mike): How does God be the devil??
(Pastor Mike tells her, but I could hear what he was saying)
amber: Esther didn't know, and she wanted to know.
Pastor Mike: well, you go tell her, okay?
(amber comes over to me)
me: what did he say?
amber: uh...I forgot!
me: Amber!! | | |
